Carex 'Milk Chocolate'

This was the PLANTS Issue 23 cover plant - a real addition to the range of 'dead' grasses.

I've mentioned the new sedge Carex 'Milk Chocolate' in PLANTS before and tried to get more information from the raiser, nurseryman Andy Kelly in Ireland to no avail.

I knew that it was perhaps twice the size of the normal species and a more arching form with pinkish creamy chocolate colouring on new stems - well my photo of a specimen I picked up confirms this.

However, PLANTS subscriber and journalist Jane Powers of the Irish Sunday Times has been able to throw a little more light on 'Milk Chocolate'.

A recently published book, A Heritage of Beauty: The Garden Plants of Ireland, by Dr E. Charles Nelson has this to say: "Carex comans 'Milk Chocolate', 1999. Has 'a lovely soft brown colouration quite different from the usual Carex comans from which it had been chosen.

Besides its attractive colour, the plant has fine arching shape to its foliage...'.

Origin: raised in a deliberate breeding programme and selected at Lullymore Nurseries , Co. Kildare; introduced at the Kildare Growers Show in 1999.

It likes a moisture retentive, but well-drained soil in sun or part shade in Europe.
