Fallopia b. 'Summer Sunshine'Details of a new golden foliage Russian Vine reached PLANTS just before we went to press for Issue 17. Discovered 4 years previously by North East based nurseryman Paul Hutchinson of Acorn Nurseries, Lanchester, County Durham, England as a sport and now protected with Plant Breeders Rights it was launched at GLEE in Birmingham, England on 19th September 1999 by Garden Centre Plants Ltd. Paul is a client of theirs and offered them the chance to market the plant. David Andrews (Sales & Marketing Manager) told me that GCP have high hopes for Fallopia baldschuanica 'Summer Sunshine' (F. 'Acofal'). "It is an exclusive introduction and we will be supplying garden centres throughout the UK with this plant as the centre piece of the new Climbing Inspirations range that the company are introducing for 2000" he said. It is a brand new colour break for the Russian Vine, it has bright red stems and attractive golden heart-shaped leaves and apparently they stay golden and do not pale to green. "It looks like a golden hop from a distance."
