Rhus typhina ‘Bailtiger’Rhus typhina ‘Bailtiger’, commonly known as TIGER EYES (Cutleaf Staghorn Sumac) had an early launch into some US garden centres from spring 2004! Bailey Nurseries were really excited about their newest introduction. The new growth of TIGER EYES is a vivid chartreuse green, quickly changing to its bright yellow summer colour. A colour that won’t dim in even the brightest summer sun. The leaf stems are a fuzzy purplish-pink and form a dramatic contrast with the lemon lime foliage. The branches angle upward while the deeply cut leaflets drape downward giving the whole plant a rather elegant, oriental look. As beautiful as TIGER EYES™ is in the summer, its colours are absolutely magnificent in the autumn (fall) as it turns a luminous combination of yellow, orange and intense scarlet. Tough and easy to grow, TIGER EYES™ differs from other sumac in a number of ways. The most obvious being it’s small size, reaching a manageable height and width of just 6 feet. Another major difference is that it spreads slowly and should not be considered invasive. They prefer full to part sun, are not particular about soil type and best of all, are quite drought tolerant once established. They are hardy in zones 4-8 in the US. Its bold architectural quality lends itself to a wide variety of garden situations. Perfect for peripheral areas, giving privacy and a good habitat for wildlife. Stunning planted en masse; it makes a perfect transitional shrub between ‘wild’ and ‘tame’ areas of the landscape. Very fitting in a Japanese garden. It also makes an equally strong statement in the shrub or near the back of the perennial border. Its yellow summer colour mixes well with perennials such as purple salvias, orange daylilies or red monarda just to name a very few. Material originally appeared in Issue 31 of PLANTS magazine.
