Cotinus c. 'Golden Spirit'

Cotinus coggygria 'Golden Spirit' ('Ancot' PBR) is a unique form of the 'Smoke Bush' which forms a medium sized shrub of a broadly upright habit.

The round leaves are a brilliant golden yellow throughout the summer and are accompanied by the usual plumes of smoke-like flowers that other varieties of the species show.

It also features the vivid autumnal (fall) colours of coral, orange and red. It prefers a well drained soil in full or part sun and should reach 2.5m x 2m in about 10 years.

The leaves do NOT scorch in direct sunlight unless exceptionally dry conditions prevail, in fact the leaves go more golden and translucent the more sun it receives.

Cotinus coggygria 'GOLDEN SPIRIT' ('Ancot') was found at the Dutch Nursery of Willem A Sanders. The nursery grows some 40,000 plants of Cotinus coggygria each year from selected mother stock but occasionally a seedling will appear - 'Golden Spirit' 'arrived' in 1990.

Truusje Sanders, Willem's daughter, recognised the potential of the new arrival after it was planted in the open and the colour became a pronounced deep yellow rather than the greeny yellow seedling that had been found as a seedling in the shade of the beds.

She and the family set up a new company, Antigone, to bring it to the market. They made a deal in the UK between Notcutts Nurseries and Hillier Nurseries to market the new shrub through their network of garden centres and key stockists.

There were 23,000 plants available at launch in 1999 in the UK and it then cost ?14.99 in a 3 litrepot.

Cotinus coggygria 'Golden Spirit'(ANCOT) is protected by European Plant Breeders Rights No. EU2401 and propagation is illegal without a license.
